Confessions of Cultural Heretics

About Us

About Our Blog

Over the past several years, we have been asked to share our opinions on a variety of topics.  Over this time, we have seen many individuals and families struggle in their decision making concerning vaccines, natural family planning, and finances (to just name a few!).   In time, the idea for this blog was born in order that we might better share our knowledge and experiences concerning these topics and many more.  Knowing that many of the readers of this blog probably will not fully agree with us, if at all, we do encourage respectful comments and dialogue so that all may continue to grow in their understanding of a variety of complex issues.

“Confessions of Cultural Heretics”

After reading just a few of our posts, you might get sense that we aren’t giving you the same advice you might get from just anyone off the street.  As we have grown as individuals and as a couple by having to face these issues and come to our own conclusions, we have found ourselves turning more and more away from what the culture wants us to do.  In many respects, we have embraced a counter-cultural lifestyle, one that at times puts us at great odds with the people around us.  In creating this blog, we felt the title “Confessions of Cultural Heretics” best reflects the fact that our lifestyle and beliefs are heterodox to the cultural norms.

Who We Are

Brian is currently family medicine resident at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and Johanna is a stay at home mom.  Both attended Franciscan University of Steubenville with degrees in theology, biology, and English.  Brian is also a graduate of the FUS Honors Program.  Before starting medical school, Brian worked for a year doing research in prenatal genetics and has two papers published from that work.  During medical school, Brian helped to start the Catholic Medical Association Student Section and was the main blogger for the group during his time as Vice President.  He also has given several talks on medicine and theology in the Diocese of Toledo.

Johanna grew up in a large, Catholic homeschool family in rural eastern Ohio.  She also has five years of experience teaching classes for homeschool students in religion, English, and Latin.   She now works diligently in perfecting the art of home economics and simple living.

Johanna and Brian are also certified Natural Family Planning instructors for the Couple to Couple League and have been teaching and counseling couples for the past 3 1/2 years and speaking on the topic for engaged couples retreats.

  1. I have been enjoying reading your blog and have found several of your posts, especially the vaccine one quite eye opening. I have nominated your blog for an ABC award. I have a post with more information on my blog here: Blessings!

  2. Hi Dr. Burke. I was the guy you met on the walk back to our cars on Friday (I gave you my business card) and the person responsible for videotaping all the event speakers. I wanted to tell you again how much I, and my sons, enjoyed your speech! Very passionate and insightful. Also a nice perspective from someone in the healthcare profession. Keep up the good fight (and keep blogging!) — and please stay in touch. God bless you and your family. Dino Piccinini, The Word Out | Marketing for Catholics
